EVE Online: Over three thousand people at Massive Attack

3,242 people in the EVE online battle at about 3:30 on Sunday morning, an achievement of such singluar delight that the good folks here at Massive Attack couldn't help but slow down and gawk curiously.

The setting for such an epic battle could of course be nowhere other than smack bang in the middle of lowsec space (the LXQ2-T system to be precise), where the Northern Coalition - a loose coalition of smaller alliances who generally control the northern areas of lowsec - faced off against "the Russian bloc", the name colloquially given to the alliances controlling the Drone Regions. If all that dense amount of in-game jargon is causing your eyes to glaze over, let's focus on that number again: three thousand players. And you thought a 40 vs. 40 World of Warcraft battleground was impressive.

By the time the EVE Online battle hit a thousand players one of CCP's development team, CCP Atlas, showed up to see what all the fuss was about and to monitor the situation. Unfortunately for some reason he made the mistake of not equipping one of the invincible developer-craft, and his neutral dot on the radar was immediately determined to be a threat and demolished in a matter of seconds by a ferocious torrent of firepower, much to the delight of everybody involved in the kill. Still, CCP were able to keep monitoring things, and will be publishing a number of findings through their developer blogs into the future.

Massive Attack would like to apologise for the interruption to your regularly-scheduled MMO programming, but when three thousand people virtually get together with the express aim of killing each other, it's important to take a moment to reflect. This sort of thing highlights perfectly the beautiful, compelling, but ultimately ruthless appeal of EVE Online.
